I ve used window units in more side opening windows than up and down ones just due to bad luck with houses.

Without knowing measurements my advice is one high btu window unit if the rooms connect or 2 smaller window units for each room and keep the thermostats realistic.

Versus a true portable air conditioner two hose unit or units with a condenser.
A small window ac unit uses about 500 watts but a central air unit uses about 4500 watts.
Window units are usually the better play for residential users.
